Hearing Aid Info and Maintenance Service

Hearing Aid information and support

If you are worried you may be losing your hearing, make an appointment with your GP who will refer you to an NHS audiologist for a hearing test (audiogram).

At Bexley Deaf Centre, we work alongside Queen Mary’s Hospital, Lewisham Hospital, Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Guys & St Thomas’ Hospital who provide us with batteries and tubing. This allows us to provide maintenance support for your hearing aid on their behalf. If you were prescribed a hearing aid from any of these locations, Bexley Deaf Centre is here to help you maintain your hearing aid, re-tube it and provide you with batteries.

Repairs and Maintenance

We can offer the following services to help your hearing aid device to continue to function effectively.

Hearing Aid Drop In Sessions

Regular maintenance not only extends the life of your hearing aid but also ensures you get the clearest sound possible. Tubing and domes should be replaced every 3–6 months, or sooner if there is heavy earwax build-up. Check for cracks, stiffness, or discolouration as signs they need replacing.

What to Expect at a Hearing Aid Fitting

Programming the devices

The provider uses your hearing test results to set the amplification levels for different frequencies and different programmes, e.g. hearing loop accessibility. They can also demonstrate how to pair the aids with mobile phones.

Real-ear measurements

A tiny microphone may be placed in your ear canal to measure how sound is delivered, ensuring accuracy.

Comfort adjustments

Volume, tone, and other settings are fine-tuned based on how natural the sound feels to you. You may be asked if you have particular interests which require you to have specialist settings such as outdoor or for listening to music.

Physical fit

The provider checks that the hearing aids sit comfortably in or behind your ears without irritation.

Education & training

You will learn how to insert, remove, clean, and maintain the devices.

Trial listening

You will test them in different sound environments (quiet, noisy, conversational) to see how they perform.

Why This Matters

The first fitting is crucial because it sets the foundation for how well you adapt to hearing aids. Most providers schedule follow-up visits to make further adjustments once you have had time to experience real-world listening situations.

Follow-Up Appointments

Once you begin using your hearing aid in everyday situations, you may notice areas for improvement. A follow-up visit allow adjustments to check the sound quality (clarity, volume, balance). Comfort of fit (moulds, tubing, domes). Depending on complexity, several visits may be required. These follow-ups are covered under your provider’s NHS Contract.

Does your hearing aid look similar to this?

Not all hearing aids are alike or have the same tubes, moulds, or batteries. Although our experienced staff are able to identify which tubes or batteries you may have, it is useful if you keep a record of what size you require.
